Head of the Maritime Safety Unit and Deputy Director Waterborne Transport
Fotini Ioannidou is Head of the Maritime Safety Unit and Deputy Director Waterborne Transport in the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission since January 2021. She studied electrical engineering in Greece, followed by postgraduate degrees in electronics and information systems in France. She started her career as an IT and telecoms consultant in Paris (CAP GEMINI), working on aviation research projects. She joined the European Commission in 1994. Her work at the Commission has focused mainly on transport policy, including policy and inter-institutional coordination, aviation safety and air traffic management. From 2012-2016 she served as Head of the Human Resources Unit for the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport and the Directorate General for Energy. From 2017 to 2020 she held the post of Head of the Road Safety Unit. She has been dealing with research, innovation and industrial policy in the area of transport all along her career in the various positions she has held.
